Soap Dish Thursday December 16, 2004 4:00AM PT
Susan Lucci The city of Pine Valley celebrates its 35th birthday this January with barely a wrinkle or worry line to show for it, despite the many scandals and headaches its inhabitants have endured over the years. Of course, when your fair town is inhabited by the likes of Erica Kane, life is a soap opera, and you don't worry too much about stepping on toes. All My Children joined the daytime lineup in 1970, and Pine Valley residents have been shocking (and entertaining) audiences ever since. Of course, they face stiff competition from folks living in other fictitious locales with equally tranquil names and tumultuous storylines. Soap operas (+133%) have a widespread following sparking a great deal of interest in search as eager fans ferret out Days of Our Lives spoilers (+93%) and other juicy tidbits that web sites like www.soapcity.com (+144%) and Soap Opera Central (+109%) provide. After four decades of soaps, you'd think a few crow's feet might start appearing, but betrayal, revenge, and seduction in idyllic settings never grow old for soap fans, some of whom have literally grown up with their favorite shows. See how these daytime shows stack up in search this week:
Days of Our Lives
General Hospital
All My Children
Passions
As the World Turns
The Bold and the Beautiful
The Young and the Restless
One Life to Live
Guiding Light
Another World
