Dear John,I very much appreciate the response and I will tell you quite honestly that I have worked very diligently to get this message out and not to allow this injustice to go unanswered. It is not by any stretch of the imagination my inclination to be in this position, however I am unable to continue down the same well trodden path of simply letting things go and making some vague gesture in the inevitable mistaken belief that the problem will simply go away. This incident emphasized for me, the very slow learner that I am, that there is only going to be a steady erososion of our way of life unless we stand up to defend and protect it. This is not breast beating, this is not over ripe sentimentalism. It is the blazing awareness of what cannot be denied. Thank You For the very kind words of encouragement. I do not believe I would be capable of sustaining this effort without the contact of people like yourself who have taken time out of their day to communicate their concern and love. This, more than anyhting, will remain with me long after the pain of the struggle has been forgotten. Thank you John, I have seriously come to a deeper understanding of how support from our Brothers is the very essence of what makes our endeavors possible.Sincerely Yours,.Michael P. The ultimate objective is to elicit the desired response . . . a smooth runnin' machine. Believe me Brother, that ain't always the way it goes. We all just do the best we can and hope we get another day to try again. Quite frankly, Mike, it is great to know that there are enlightened Ironworkers in our organization. You have a gift. Use it wisely.>>John>>----- Original Message -----> From: Michael P. Dear John,>> I am deeply appreciative of your time and sincere desire to help me. I will be the very first to admit that I need all the help I can get. You are right about so many things regarding the medium and the message, and the only problem that I have had is that I was time constrained from writting a different piece for every audience, and I guess that I am so comfortable with the fact that I don't consider myself particularly smart in many ways, so how could I possibly talk down to someone. Almost always, the people around me seem smarter than I am to me, and that includes Ironworkers, to be sure.>> I understand the essential point, however, and I will take it into consideration in a serious way, because I know that it was meant from a point of positive criticism and can only enhance our message. It is our message, not mine alone, and I am always encouraged and motivated when I hear from true men of courage and conviction and humility. Maybe you take complimenmts well, and maybe not. Well that is not a compliment, in my way of thinking it is an aknowledgement of obvious fact.>>> Thank You for the concern,>> Please Stay in touch..>> Your Brother,>> Michael P. I got a good piece of advise from my favorite English teacher in High School. She said these are the seven steps to getting your message across. 1. Jot down notes in the heat of the moment using metaphors. 2. Go back later and make complete sentences, paragraphs, introduction and closing. 3. Go back and eliminate the prepositional phrases. 4. Go back and check spelling and grammar. 5. Go back and think of a catchy title that invokes a vision. 6. Have an honest friend proofread. 7. Revise, re-proofread, revise, sleep on it and then put it to print. The reason the guys are getting on you is that you are skipping steps and you are asking them for their opinion on your writing style as well as your content. Style needs to enhance the message and endear the reader to the author.> >> >We know the Union Movement needs crusaders Mike, but we must ensure that the crusaders make it home from the battle. Every day will provide new challenges and opportunities, we need to keep ourselves in the game so we can fight another day and we don't want to be taken out by our own troops. Biggest mistake in motivational speaking is to talk down to the troops.
