The air inLas Vegas could be some of the most dangerous in the country. That's what a new report says. The Public Interest Research Group or "PIRGS" reports Las Vegas ranks 18th among large cities as the worst air pollution. News 3's Kerstin Lindquist reports on why some people say this report isn't telling the truth.
The full report called "Danger in the Skies" will be released this morning. It's expected to show massive air pollution problems across the country with detailed information about Las Vegas. But other similar studies claim our air is actually getting healthier
The Cato Institute another non profit public policy research foundation says air quality since the 1970's and most dramatically the late 80's has been getting better. Even in some of the worst places like the San Fernando Valley in California , unhealthy days have been going down thanks to lower emissions from cars and tighter environmental regulations.
But the Danger in the Skies report says the opposite, focusing on fine particle soot and ozone smog. The authors claim these pollutants come primarily from power plants and the standards for power plant emissions should be tighter.
They claim the Bush Administrations Clear Skies act of 2002 does the opposite favoring energy companies over public health
Today’s report will be based on data collected in 2003. In 2002 there was no data specifically for Las Vegas , but Nevada ranked 34th in the country for unhealthy levels of smog, with only 5 days out of the year registering unhealthy.
